What is a dental sealant?

Dental sealants are a type of preventive treatment. They are used to help protect teeth from cavities and tooth decay so that your child can keep their teeth, mouth and smile healthy.

Who can receive dental sealants?

Sealants are typically provided when your child’s permanent molars come in (between the ages of 6 and 12). They are made from a clear or tooth-colored resin material which is painted on the teeth. Once in place, the sealants will last for several years to provide long-term protection for your child’s smile.

How do dental sealants protect teeth?

Sealants form a smooth coating over the natural pits and chewing surfaces of the teeth, blocking out decay-causing factors such as food debris, harmful bacteria and plaque. This smooth coating also makes it easier for children to keep their teeth clean with normal brushing and flossing habits. Depending on your child’s needs, they may need to have sealants applied several times as they grow.
